The Nuclear Arms Race was a competition for supremacy in nuclear warfare during the Cold War between the United States and the USSR along with their respective allies within the collective defence treaties of NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

Either side continuously increased their military strength in the fear that each other was doing the same for offensive purposes. For every new weapon that was created a countermeasure was also developed which in turn thrust military technology forward at a remarkable rate. As each side fought for advantage over the other, the need for secrecy was paramount and much of this military technology remains highly classified, even to this day.

On occasion, glimpses of these secret technologies such as advanced aircraft or space based weapons systems would have undoubtedly been caught in the skies by many witnesses as the Cold War raged on. As this aerial phenomenon could not be readily identified or explained, they were designated as Unidentified Flying Objects or UFOs.
